Role of Selenium in the body
It plays a critical role in metabolism and thyroid function and helps protect your body from damage caused by oxidative stress. What’s more, selenium may help boost your immune system, slow age-related mental decline, and even reduce your risk of heart disease.
Symptoms of Selenium Deficiency
Selenium deficiency has been found to have a role in human growth and reproduction as well. Moderate deficiency plays a role in myodegenerative diseases, such as muscle weakness. Low selenium state has been associated with depressed mood, anxiety, and confusion.
Symptoms of Selenium Toxicity
Selenium toxicity can occur with acute or chronic ingestion of excess selenium. Symptoms of selenium toxicity include nausea; vomiting; nail discoloration, brittleness, and loss; hair loss; fatigue; irritability; and foul breath odor (often described as “garlic breath”). Selenium is found in the environment in soil.
Good Sources of Selenium
Brazil nuts, seafood, and organ meats are the richest food sources of selenium. Other sources include muscle meats, cereals, and other grains, and dairy products.
