Ruthenium

Ruthenium is a chemical element with the symbol Ru and atomic number 44. It is a rare transition metal belonging to the platinum group of the periodic table. Like the other metals of the platinum group, ruthenium is inert to most other chemicals.

Ruthenium compounds stain or discolor the skin and is the only group 8 element that does not have two electrons.

Ruthenium is one of the best hardeners for addition to palladium or platinum. It is alloyed with these metals to make electrical contacts with extreme wear resistance.

Ruthenium is used to plate other metals. Thermal decomposition or electrode position are the most common metals used to make ruthenium coatings.
